Dirtbox would like to introduce you to a range of leather goods making waves everywhere. MAKR Carry Goods is the brainchild of Jason Gregory, originating in Winter Park, Florida.

Makr make beautiful leather goods that are designed to withstand the test of time. Each piece is individually hand crafted with the attentive care of old world artisans, and designed to serve a practical purpose.

Here is a little Q&A with Jason Gregory to shed a bit of light on the label...
What is the ethos behind Makr?
Makr is all about the user. We think about how a product is used and whether such a product is even necessary before we begin designing it. We want our products to solve problems, but we also want them to be beautiful. We spend a tremendous amount of time selecting materials that will be as beautiful as they are functional. We don’t rush to be first to market with certain products – we’d rather take our time and develop the best product we possibly can.

Firstly, could you explain a little bit about yourself and how Makr came about?

I’ve always been a designer and a maker of things. I’ve also always been fascinated by materials and craftsmanship, but more than anything else, I appreciate products created with thoughtfulness and care. I began Makr as a side project while working in architectural branding but it quickly became my primary passion as well as my career.

How do you go about sourcing the different elements and materials for each product?

Sourcing materials is one of the most challenging aspects of what I do. Whenever possible, we try to source locally though sometimes we need to reach outside of the US to find the perfect material or component so we do have two or three suppliers in Japan and Italy. It takes a shocking amount of effort to find vendors who care as much about their product as I care about Makr. However, when I do find such a vendor it can make all the difference. I’ve been very fortunate to work with a tremendously talented and passionate group of vendors, especially my friends at Horween.

How did you learn to sew and gain the basic skills to make bags and accessories?

I’m a designer first and foremost, though learning to sew was completely necessary so that I could more rapidly prototype. Going to the factory and sitting down with craftspeople, showing them how to put the object together from a pattern standpoint, I just picked up on the ways of sewing and fabricating. I learn from doing and seeing rather than books so it was just a matter of paying attention.

Australian Light Horse by Roland Perry. My great grandfather was a Light Horseman in the First World War. I recently found letters that were written to him when he was overseas in the service from home. It's quite shocking to think about what they went through.

Every beard is perfect. The beard is in the eye of the beholder.

Where do you like to escape to?
I usually escape back to my farm where I grew up. It’s a great juxtaposition of living. You have to light a wood stove for hot water, outside toilet (not pleasant in the middle of winter I can assure you), no phone reception. Its like being back in the early days which I love.

How many pairs of opticals do you own?

Who do you admire?

A lot of people. James Dean, Jackson Pollock, Peggy from Mad Men, Paul Newman... There's just way too many to list them all. But mostly my sister, she's incredibly good at saving.

Favourite film?

A tie between The King's Speech, Pan's Labyrinth, and There Will Be Blood.

What are you reading?

I just picked up "Of mice and men" by John Steinbeck. It was a gift from a good friend.

What is your favourite thing you own?
My Margaret Howell Fairisle Knit Jumper, I bought it in New York and I'll probably
have it until the day I die - and my APC backpack, it goes everywhere with me.

What do you recommend to eat in Brisbane?

My friend Dan makes the nicest avocado, hommus and tomato on toasted sourdough.
Find him at CUP in West End, they have really nice coffee as well.

What is your favourite label in-store and why?

I just bought a Gitman Vintage check long sleeve which is particularly well-made and comfortable.

But I've collected a fair bit of B-store over the years, so I'll be loyal and say them.

Originating in Ashland, Pennsylvania in 1948, the Gitman Bros are one of the last shirt-makers keeping production in the United States. Everyone on their production team has been honing their craft for generations - instilling a sense of American history and skill into each shirt.

Gitman Vintage is a line introduced in 1978 devoted to re-appropriating styles of bygone eras - looking into their extensive archives to bring back their most loved styles for a modern audience. (Fun fact - Gitman have an archive of over 100 collar styles to mix and match with). Here's what just arrived:

Ukulele

Developed in the 1880s, the Ukulele (or Ukelele) is a four stringed instrument belonging to the guitar family.

Popularised for a stateside audience during the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915, the Ukulele found itself in the hands of vaudeville performers such as Roy Smeck, who in 1926 appeared playing the Ukulele in a short film "His Pastimes".

Highly portable and inexpensive, the Ukulele soon became an icon of the Jazz Age, and manufacturers such as Regal, Harmony, and Martin added Ukulele's to their production to take advantage of the demand.

By the late 1940s to the late 1960s, the Ukulele gained widespread appeal through the television show "The Arthur Godfrey Show" and Tiny Tim's 1968 hit "Tiptoe Through the Tulips":

As with most things, the Ukulele declined in popularity until it saw a resurgence in the late 1990s when Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's cover of "Over the Rainbow" gained international attention in films such as 50 First Dates, Snakes on a Plane, and television shows including Cold Case and ER.

Today, the Ukulele enjoys as much attention as ever - with artists such as Pearl Jam's frontman Eddie Vedder recently releasing "Ükulele Songs" to a more than positive response.

All we can say is that we hope the Ukulele is around for many more generations to come...
